Atlas's Big Adventure

Simon Shaw will embark on a mad cap adventure to deliver a bus converted to a mobile IT classroom and clubhouse for the kids in the Kibera Slum in Kenya. Orignally scheduled for April 2020, then October 2020, a new date is being arranged for 2021.

In the dark ages, a larger than average child was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Aged 10 he left Africa and went on to become one of the legends of international rugby, playing for England and the British and Irish Lions. This man, Simon Shaw, returned to Kenya for the first time in January 2019 as an Atlas Rugby Champion.

There he met the kids we support from the Kibera Slum in Nairobi.

"It just came to me. I said Atlas could get a London bus and fit it out to be a mobile classroom, and drive it to Nairobi for the kids to use."

The Dates

5 days, 4 nights: Subject to change due to Covid. New dates to be confirmed in Spring 2021.

Well... who knew that getting a bus kitted out as a classroom and all the way to Kenya would not be easy??? The project team swing between joy and despair in about equal measure. It has been HARD HARD HARD thus far, but in January we bought a second-hand bus chassis.

Now it's with Masters Fabricators in Nairobi whose fitting engineers are transforming it into a classroom. Panel work is complete, Laptops have arrived, solar panels have been installed, and it is nearly ready for deployment.

Dealing with Covid 19

Thanks to Atlas Foundation donors, and the brilliant project management team on the ground, the engineering works have continued through lockdown in Kenya, protecting local 30 jobs.

Masters Fabricators have kindly donated a Covid compliant misting system to disinfect the DigiBus making it as safe for our children, coaches and teachers as can be.

Hemingways Foundation

The Hemingways team are much more than our travel partners. The Atlas Foundation works alongside the Hemingways Foundation to fund rugby and education programmes in Kenya. The hotel group was founded and is still run by the Evans family who have deep roots in rugby, as players, owners, and supporters from grassroots to the professional game.

We are proud to be returning to Hemingways, our friends and natural home in Kenya. For more information on the Hemingways Collection please see the brochure below
