Support Support a private project Richmond Heavies Foundation Fund Donate Fundraise BACKGROUND The Richmond Heavies is the veteran’s side of Richmond Rugby Club in West London, one of the oldest clubs in the world and presently playing in the RFU Championship as the sole amateur club. Several recent unexpected bereavements of players have led to the creation of a charitable foundation to help protect senior and junior players at the club, as well as being able to help those immediately impacted, by a serious illness or bereavement. AIMS PREVENTION. Preventing future avoidable medical conditions through enhanced health screening and education, made available for the whole Richmond Club. SUPPORT. Assisting rugby families hit hard by sudden death or life-changing injury. INITIAL FUNDRAISING We will kick off the Fund with a fundraising Sporting Lunch in the West End on Friday October 12th. INITIAL PLANNED USE FOR SOME OF THE MONEY RAISED Because the fact that a couple of the deaths were heart related we wanted to try to focus some of the initial funds in that area. The foundation approached CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) to understand what service they offer to clubs. The foundation has subsequently made an initial offer to Richmond club to cover the cost of cardiac screening for 75 players at the club, both female and male. We are exploring how to role this out to the wider club community. We intend to offer education and screening opportunities for other diseases, such as prostate, breast cancer, testicular cancer to name a few. Any money that you donate, will go directly towards these two goals, with the greater emphasis on the protection and education of young sportsmen and women.
